Gauging Draft Value - Reviewing 2008
August 30, 2009
Every year it's tough to gauge how well any team has drafted until the season is over. Every team will immediately look back and wonder how well the draft went. Some teams will be disappointed immediately, but then finish the season on top. Others look at the draft outcome with a good feeling that slowly drifts away as the season goes the wrong direction.
Every owner brings their own strategy to the draft, which is what makes it interesting every season. Some take more risks than others or focus on certain players or favorite teams. In the end, only time will tell, which is what we've done here. To review the 2008 NAFL Draft we've developed a formula that takes into account the round a player was taken in along with the total points scored in the season. From this we've developed a score the gives more value to players that scored well, but were drafted later overall. Listed below are the picks for the best value and worst values from last season. (The value in parenthesis is the raw computed score.) Best values: pk - Knights - Jason Elam, 12th round, 99 points (217.8) pk - Tigers - John Kasay, 12th round, 97 points (213.4) qb - Knights - Kurt Warner, 9th round, 108 points (205.2) ds - Knights - TB Bucs, 11th round, 64 points (134.4) rb - Hellcats - Matt Forte, 5th round, 67 points (100.5) wr - Big Dogs - Anquan Boldin, 2nd round, 78 points (93.6) te - Corn Snakes - Antonio Gates, 2nd round, 36 points (43.2) Worst values: te - Crunch - Jeremy Shockey, 6th round, 0 points (0.0) rb - Crunch - Darren McFadden, 1st round, 0 points (0.0) rb - Enforcers - Laurence Maroney, 2nd round, 0 points (0.0) |
