2007 Draft Runs the Course
August 26, 2007
With 19 running backs already locked up through the keeper selections prior to the draft, it was no surprise that half of the first round picks were spent on players other than running backs.

Arizona, having already held onto RB Shaun Alexander, used the number one overall pick to select RB Travis Henry, while North Carolina used the second overall pick on WR Steve Smith since they had already kept two running backs on the roster. Rhode Island stayed true to form by selecting RB Willie Parker. Kentucky took a gamble with the tenth pick of round one, selecting RB Brandon Jacobs much higher than most expected.

Other notable results saw Novato selected the first rookie, keeping to their normal form by taking RB Adrian Peterson with the second to last pick of the first round, while South Bend grabbed WR Calvin Johnson with the last pick of the first round.

Antonio Gates was the first tight end selected, chosen by San Diego with the 30th overall pick (round 3, pick 6), starting a run of six tight ends through rounds three and four. San Diego also took the first defense, grabbing the Chicago Bears D/S with the 51st overall pick. Arizona made Adam Vinatieri the first kicker chosen, using their first pick of round five.

The title of Mr Irrelevant went to TE Marcedes Lewis, who Detroit made their final selection of the day.

The first trade of 2007 came immediately following the draft when Casper sent QB Chad Pennington to South Bend for QB Steve McNair in a trade to straighten out bye week backups.
