Storm Smash Knights for NAFL Title
December 20, 2011
The San Diego Storm crushed their playoff opponents with 132 total points in the postseason, finishing their 2011 as NAFL Champions with a 70-41 victory over the New York Knights in American Bowl XX. San Diego's scoring total set an American Bowl record, as did the combined 111 points for both teams.

The Storm raced out to a 19-0 lead on Thursday night, thanks to Roddy White's highest output of the season. Then RB Reggie Bush and RB Marshawn Lynch each posted a season-high 12 points to help offset a 26-point performance from New York QB Drew Brees, his second of the season.

By midday Sunday, San Diego held a 43-34 lead over the Knights, but Storm PK Stephen Gostkowski contributed 11 points and QB Tim Tebow, stepping in for an injured Matt Schaub, added 12 more points for his season high to increase the lead and guarantee San Diego their first ever league title.

Aside from Brees, New York got very little scoring out of the remainder of the lineup, with PK Mike Nugent scoring eight points and RB Frank Gore adding six more on Monday night, which was too little too late.

In the Dog Bowl, the Kentucky Crunch earned next season's top overall pick with a 22-20 win over the Arizona Hellcats in a low scoring affair. With home field advantage, Kentucky got just enough scoring to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Hellcats.

In all, the 2011 season provided some big scores, with the South Bend Fubar'd Quasimodos scoring a league record 638 points during the regular season, and some surprises across the board. South Bend QB Cam Newton should be a shoe-in for the Rookie of the Year award, while there are a number of MVP candidates worthy of consideration during voting over the coming weeks.
