NEWSFlorida Flamingos Earn 2009 Title
December 22, 2009
The San Diego Storm got off to a quick start in their first ever American Bowl appearance, but the Florida Flamingos stormed back with a combined 36 points by QB Eli Manning, WR DeSean Jackson and PK Jeff Reed to earn their second NAFL Championship with a 49-24 win.
San Diego QB Vince Young, filling in for injured starter Matt Ryan, scored 12 points and WR Andre Johnson added seven to help take a 19-13 lead in the early Sunday games, but they got no help after that point in the team's lowest scoring output of the season. Florida's Jackson scored 11 points and Reed added 13 to help push the Flamingos over the top, while Manning's 12 points more than sealed the franchise's second championship, marking their first in Florida. The team's last title came in 1999 when the franchise was in Rhode Island. In the annual Dog Bowl, a game that decides the top overall pick in the next draft, Portland outpaced Casper with a 75-47 to earn the top spot in the 2010 draft. The Pirates got 14 points apiece from QB Philip Rivers, TE Dallas Clark and PK Matt Prater, while WR Miles Austin added 11 in the win. Casper got good production from QB Peyton Manning's 18 points and WR Steve Smith added 12 points, but Portland's highest offensive output of the season was just too much to overcome. ARCHIVE |
