NEWSWarriors Win Fourth NAFL Title
December 16, 2008
With a 1-3 start to the season and star quarterback Tom Brady sidelined for the season, the Washington Warriors looked nothing like an eventual league champion, but 11 consecutive wins later they were crowned the American Bowl XVII Champions after a 55-15 win over the Florida Flamingos.
Game MVP Matt Cassel led the way for Washington with 16 points, which would be enough as the Flamingos posted a season low 15 total points in the game. WR Steve Smith, acquired from Novato just prior to the trading deadline, added 10 points and TE Dallas Clark pitched in with a season-high nine points with the team's top running back, Brandon Jacobs, out due to injury. Florida WR Andre Johnson did everything he could, putting up 12 points in the loss, but the rest of the position players, including rookie sensation RB Chris Johnson and QB Eli Manning, were held scoreless. The win earned Washington their second consecutive NAFL Championship and their fourth overall title in their 17-year history. Dog Bowl XI The Kentucky Crunch scored the most points since week five and earned the top overall pick in the 2009 draft with their 38-17 win over the Detroit Enforcers. With RB Frank Gore out, rookie RB Darren McFadden scored a season-high eight points for Kentucky. ARCHIVE |
